First Time Home Buyer: Don’t Be Afraid to Ask Questions!

Information Center - Buying A Home

If you are a first time home buyer the best thing you can do besides your research is ask a lot questions and take notes if you have to.  There are many first time home buyers who are in the dark about of a lot things and what you think you know could be nothing more than hearsay.  Asking a lot questions will only ensure you know what is taking place before you sign on the dotted line.  A large number of people are excited to be buying their first house and are so happy to stop renting that they will do just about anything to get into a home.

No matter who you ask, you will be gaining valuable information.  Your parents, co-workers, or even friends that have gone through the process can help you declare what you want, what you don’t want, and can give you an idea of any red flags that need to be held up at any time during the buying process.  You should never be too eager and this is something that is the hardest to control because the prospect of owning your first home is such a thrill you start to not care about the legality of it.  This is why more homes are being foreclosed on then ever before because people don’t take the time to understand just what they are getting themselves into.  It is not like breaking a lease from an apartment complex and the sooner you gain a more general understanding of this the better off you will be.

When you are sitting down and talking to your real estate agent ask them a barrage of questions if you have to.  Never be afraid that you are being too pushy or ignorant.  No matter what the questions are if you want an answer and are unsure of anything always ask first.  If you are a first time home buyer this will be the largest purchase you have made to this point and signing your name on a six figure loan application should be thought about in great detail before the ink ever hits the contract.
