Ways to avoid basement flooding takes a little research and a whole lot of common sense.  You have to find ways to guide water away from basement windows and window wells and this can be done by knowing where water has a tendency to build up around your home.  Since prevention is the one thing that will help stop basement flooding you want to make sure you have a good sense of what might happen should you get an unusual amount of rain.

You want to make sure your gutters are clear, clean, and running away from your house.  If they are not and you allow them to build with water this causes a trickle down effect, literally.  Making sure the downspouts are all connected and guiding the water into water containment areas is also going to help prevent flooding from happening.  If you have drains in your backyard always make sure they are clear of debris and dirt because you do not want any access of water building up to cause trouble for your basement.

Covering your window wells is also a good preventative action to take.  Sometimes it does not take much to flood this area because all it takes is for a drain to not be clean and clear for these to start collecting water.  Window well covers can be purchased at any home improvement store and should be one of the first steps to take in sealing your basement and keeping it free from flooding.

If you are a person that uses a sump pump, you can check it periodically to make sure it’s working by dumping a few gallons of water to check the operation and status of it.  The failure of sump pumps are one of the main reasons people have basement flooding because they stop working without you knowing and you can rest assured when this happens it is most certainly going to rain.

Making sure there is never any water being collected around the house whether in the garden, driveway, or grass is another way to ensure that you are not going to have the issue of basement flooding.  Cutting shrubbery and exposing as much soil to the sun as possible will be a good step because the faster the soil dries the more water it can soak up when it does rain.
